Enough with the Pendergast personal tragedies coming back to haunt him - let's have him back to his brilliant self and solving impossible, non-Pendergast family history related crimes.Yes, but only as part of the Limited Edition right now. Don't get me wrong, it's a good story but I miss the old Pendergast, a story where I could read about a larger than life, unusual hero who displays almost supernatural abilities in solving crimes and one where I can relax secure in the knowledge that, although it may take time and a few wrong turns, he will save the day. As such, it is not Pendergast who solves the mystery or saves the day. In Blue Labyrinth he does not even seem to be the central character - easily bested by the enemy and stricken with a deadly poison. With every recent book it seems that Pendergast is no longer quite so brilliant, makes more mistakes, and displays weak or unpleasant characteristics. However, more recently the books have focused on his family history which, while interesting and allowing us to see just why Pendergast is the way he is, has diluted the crime solving element. That's what I loved about him and the books. As more books in the series came out we continued to be awed by the way he solved seemingly impossible crimes. When we first met him in Relic and again Reliquary, we were blown away by his brilliance, bravery and wit. This story was as well written and well told as ever but it was not a Pendergast story as such. While I love all the Pendergast books, I can't help but feel disappointed and slightly cheated.
